MINOR SURGERY

The clinic offers a minor surgery service to safely remove benign (non-cancerous) skin lesions with our GP specialist, Dr Abi Smail, who has extensive experience in minor surgery. Benign skin lesions are harmless growths. While they do not pose a health risk, they can be removed either for cosmetic reasons or if they become symptomatic - meaning they cause pain, catch on clothing, or frequently become infected.

Prior to any treatment, Dr Smail will undertake an assessment of any areas of concern. You will have time to discuss any queries and the options available.

Treatments are carried out in our minor procedures clinic room with our health care assistant assisting Dr Smail during the procedure. Treatment aims to remove lesions with minimal discomfort and optimise healing/scarring.

The clinic can treat a wide range of benign conditions including cysts, moles, lipomas, skin tags, seborrhoeic keratosis among others.

How are lesions removed?

Minor surgery is performed under local anaesthetic, meaning you will be awake but the area will be numb.

Common techniques include:

Excision: The lesion is cut out entirely. This is standard for cysts and lipomas to ensure the whole "sac" is removed to prevent recurrence.

Shave/Snip: Used for lesions that sit on the surface, like skin tags or seborrhoeic keratosis. The lesion is "shaved" flat with the skin.

Curettage: The lesion is scraped away using a sharp circular instrument called a curette.

Healing and scarring depends on the type of procedure, how any wounds are closed and the location of the lesion. We will provide you with guidance after the procedure which explains in detail how to monitor/care for your wound.

Please note that while we can remove the majority of lesions, we are unable to remove cysts/lipomas on the face which are best treated by a consultant in dermatology/plastic surgery. We can arrange onward referral to a specialist if required.

We reserve the right to not remove any lesions which are concerning or suggestive of malignancy but will advise you accordingly about onward referral/management and arrange referral if desired.
